Jonathan Gibbs
As a painter and printmaker, I live and work in East Lothian. My wood engravings have illustrated many books and other print or electronic media. Since 1979, I have exhibited regularly in London and Edinburgh.
In parallel to the freedom of studio work, I very much enjoy collaborating with designers and publishers. Behind the scenes, many of my drawings are from life using graphite, charcoal or colour pencil. For painting, I use oil on wood panels prepared with gesso. Primarily abstract, there are occasional symbolic references or things seen.
Recently, I have made some larger woodcuts with elements of collagraph and collage. Organic and natural forms complement landscape and domestic spaces like a tree seen through a fragmented window pane; stones and bones; birds and fish. Currently, I am working on small, hand-finished rounds of boxwood which were cut many years ago from the garden just beyond my studio.
