New Book

A new how-to-do-it book by former SWE Chair Chris Daunt on the technique of wood engraving. Based on the author’s many years of experience as a wood engraver and teacher, this book will guide you through the processes of preliminary drawing, engraving, and printing. There is a guide to tools and materials, chapters on sampler blocks, and various subject matter such as landscapes and portraits. The chapter on printing is extensive, emphasizing the importance of this skill, whether you use a press or burnisher. The book will be reviewed by Peter Lawrence in the February issue of Multiples.

Hilary Paynter MBE
17th June 2023
The Society is delighted to announce that Hilary Paynter has received an honour for services to the Arts in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
The honour recognises Hilary’s exceptional career as a distinguished practitioner of wood engraving and her role in the Society for over forty years. Firstly, in helping to re-convene the SWE, then as Secretary followed by Chair and as Exhibitions Secretary, a post she has held continually since 1984. Through Hilary’s work in this role, the SWE has toured its Annual Exhibition to the furthest reaches of the UK and beyond.
Hilary also played a key role in helping the Wood Engravers’ Network establish in the USA and supporting letters from WEN members will be entering the V&A collection to enable researchers and scholars of Hilary’s work, and of the medium in general, to understand the full extent of her contribution.
