Han Xiao

I am Chinese studying wood engraving in Japan. I was first attracted by its exquisite detail, but gradually I came to appreciate the value of the ancient art that is not widely known to the public.

Since the 18th century, it has not been forgotten by people.

As far as I am concerned, the manifestations of Wood Engraving are extremely diverse: it can be rough, bighearted or delicate. Although the only colors are black and white, it admits the possibility of many gradations between black and white.

As an oriental Chinese living in Japan, the art form I seek is to apply Western sculpture techniques into ancient traditional oriental decorative patterns and traditional stories, to achieve a combination of Chinese and Western aesthetics, with a unique beauty distinct from both traditional art and modern art.
