Hilary Paynter MBE

Hilary began as a sculptor, which still influences the way she works today. She draws a very loose idea on a block, developing this intuitively into her distinctive wood engravings that play with perspective and the laws of physics.

Hilary was elected to the Society of Wood Engravers in the 1970s and was instrumental in its revival. She has held many positions including Chair and continues as the Exhibitions Secretary organising its Annual Exhibition. She has also had several roles in the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, including President. The V&A holds the largest public collection of her work with over 70 wood engravings.
