Anne Hayward

As a young student at Southampton College of Art I was introduced to a wide range of printmaking techniques. I then took Painting as a special subject for N.D.D at St. Martins. After gaining the Art Teachers Certificate (London University), I taught Art part time for many years alongside my own work.

I gave up teaching in 1989 to become a maker of original prints, mainly wood engravings. I love this absorbing and expressive craft.

Nature is magical and inspiring. Observation and drawing are my starting points. I believe that paintings and prints are about a composition of marks, shapes, lines, tones and textures on a flat surface. A grid on the picture plane enables me to create an illusion of space, by the juxtaposition of surface tones and textures, rather than traditional perspective.
