Howard Phipps
Howard is a painter and printmaker based near Salisbury. He studied Fine Art ( painting ) at the Gloucestershire College of Art, followed by a post graduate year in Brighton.
His work is often landscape based, and is rooted in the chalk downland of Wiltshire and Dorset close to where he lives. He is fascinated by ancient trackways and striking hill forms, timeless places on which earlier generations have left their mark. Howard makes his working drawings on location, and likes to use the fall of light to reveal the sculptural nature of his subjects.
Howards work is in public and private collections including the British Museum, the Ashmolean, and Salisbury Museum who hosted his large solo exhibition in 2021.
He has been an SWE member since 1984, an RWA academician since 1979, and an RE associate since 2021. Howard has also been a frequent exhibitor at Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions since 1985, where he has also received the Christies Print award.
