Jenny Portlock
I loved drawing and making things from an early age and didn’t imagine myself doing anything else when I grew up. This inspired me to pursue an artistic career, and after qualifying in Graphic Design, I became a Book Designer for Longman Pearson. Over the ensuing years I also undertook regular book design commissions from several other leading Educational Publishers, including both the Cambridge and Oxford University Presses.
My design experience helped me develop my own ideas and has given my engravings and linocuts their strong graphic quality. My inspiration is drawn from my own imagination and is combined with a love of the countryside in the UK, Italy and SW France where I was living for several years. I admire the ‘Ukiyoe’ (floating world ideology of Japanese artists with whom I’ve recently been in touch. My images are often dreamlike with a hidden meaning. I love rhythmical shapes and intricate detail.
