Nicholas Jagger

I think of sculptural figures as metaphors of the human, particularly in the way they show a relation to time. In many cases the figures are the only remaining fragments of a larger group, and are carved or cast in a pose which leaves the figure in a perpetual state of waiting, and all that implies. Other pieces seem to have an indecipherable quality, looking on at the people of the floating world, without seeming to belong to them. I came across the phrase ’the human imprint’ to describe what Frank Auerbach was trying to reach in all the layers of paint in his early oil painting, and I think it is a phrase applicable to what I am searching for.
