Derek Setford
I was born in Liverpool in 1936 and moved with my family to the Lake District in 1944, living there during my teenage years until becoming an art student at first in Leeds and then the Slade School.
My first contact with wood engraving was being shown a copy of Bewick’s Birds by the art teacher. I was of course impressed but my printmaking as a student was entirely in the medium of etching.
After student days I became a teacher in Welwyn Garden City and then at Rochdale College of Art. I took early retirement from there after twenty five years.
Having more time to do my own work my focus in printmaking switched to wood engraving. I submitted work to the SWE and was proud to become a member.
